Gujarati Dal is delicious, spicy and sweet dal. You can enjoy with rice or hot rotis. It is daily dish for Gujaratis. They can not enjoy their lunch without Dal-Rice.
Ingredients
2 cups toor dal (split gram lentils)
2 tbsp peanuts
5-6 soaked cocum pieces
1 chopped tomato
2 tsp jaggery
1 tbsp lemon juice
1 tsp red chili powder
0.5 tsp turmeric Powder
10 to 12 curry leaves
1/4 tsp mustard seeds
1/4 tsp cumin seeds
1/4 tsp fenugreek leaves
1/2 tsp asafoetida
1/2 tsp garam masala
2 to 3 cloves
1-2 bay leaves
1 tbsp oil
1 tbsp finely chopped coriander
4 cups water
1 tbsp ghee
Salt to taste
Method
1. Wash and cook the dal into pressure cooker, tomato and peanuts in 4 cups of water.
2. Once the dal is cooked in pressure cooker, blend dal and tomato till it turns smooth.
3. Add cocum, jaggery, green chilies, chili powder, salt and turmeric powder and cook for 5 minutes.
4. Heat oil into small kadhai and add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, fenugreek seeds and let them crackle, once it crackles add asafoetida, curry leaves, bay leaves, cloves.
5. Add this oil into dal and mix it well.
6. Add lemon juice and garam masala.
7. Cook on low flame for 10-15 minutes.
8. Garnish with chopped coriander leaves.
9. Serve hot with plain rice and ghee.
